As the Overdose Prevention Program Manager, I propose an essential enhancement to the services provided at Pinal County’s heat relief and hydration stations. As you know, the increasing frequency of extreme heat events poses significant health risks, particularly to our most vulnerable populations.
In 2024 alone, there were 35 heat-related deaths reported in our region. This statistic highlights the urgent need for comprehensive measures to protect those at risk. One critical aspect that deserves immediate attention is the intersection of opioid use and heat exposure, which can significantly increase the risk of overdose and heat-related complications.
To address this issue, we propose introducing naloxone at all heat relief and hydration stations. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses rapidly and effectively. By equipping our stations with naloxone, we can enhance our emergency response capabilities and potentially save lives in critical situations. Arizona has a Good Samaritan Law to protect people who bravely step up to save the life of someone in need
.We believe that this initiative will: Provide essential support to individuals at risk of opioid overdose.
Enhance the safety and preparedness of our heat relief operations.
Demonstrate our community’s commitment to protecting and serving all residents, particularly during extreme weather events.
Additionally, the Pinal County Public Health Overdose Prevention Program can supply naloxone and train staff and volunteers on its proper administration as well as the signs of an overdose.
We want your support and approval for this initiative.
